Jay Graber, a cryptocurrency engineer, will head
Twitter's attempts to build a decentralized social media system.
Graber, who worked on the privacy currency Zcash until
October 2018, revealed the news on Twitter on Monday:
Graber stated in a blog post in January 2020 that “efforts to decentralize social networks aim to fundamentally shift the balance of power in favor of users by providing them the option to change services quickly and manage their identity and data.”
Graber has received funding from the Ethereum
Foundation to continue working on a project called InterRep. That initiative
seeks to guarantee that the accounts you connect with on social media are
“trustworthy,” while also emphasizing privacy and decentralization.
Graber's hiring was teased by Bluesky on Aug. 5, which
was originally revealed in December 2019:
Graber's hiring, according to Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, is "another step toward decentralizing Twitter and social media."
